Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) have arrested Christine Ambai’s alleged killer.

DCI, in a statement on Tuesday, said they arrested her boyfriend Innocent Kaleo Makokha.

Ambani, a Kiriri Women’s University student, left campus on Monday, July 12, and that was the last time she was seen.

Days later, it emerged that she was kidnapped, and Ksh87,000 her kidnappers were demanding ransom.

DCI says on the fateful day of her murder; she met Makokha Githurai 45. Friends say she was upbeat and looking forward to their date; little did she know what her boyfriend had planned.

According to the management, the two lovebirds booked a guest room in Githurai 45 for a few hours. She was to spend a few hours with her boyfriend and return to campus to sit for her Continuous Assessment Tests.

But she never returned to school. One of her friends was waiting for her in town. They had agreed that while she plaited, Ambani would spend time with Makokha, and they head back to campus for their CAT in the afternoon.

But, Makokha “emerged from the room later and topped up the earlier paid amount, to last them for the entire night,” according to DCI.

Detectives established that it is during this night that the suspect allegedly murdered Ambani, stabbing her in the neck and left her bleeding profusely.

“Makokha, a 23-year-old university student at Mt. Kenya University, then took over Christine’s phone and logged in to Christine’s family WhatsApp group. Posing as Christine, he sent a message asking family members to send her Sh87,000 claiming that she wanted to refund her boyfriend (Makokha) the money he had spent to help her settle in the college,” DCI says in the statement.

Further profiling of Makokha by investigators based at the Crime Research and Intelligence bureau revealed shocking details on his criminal record.

He is a dangerous criminal who was pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Specialist Needs Education.

The suspect is reported to have murdered his brother, his wife, and their baby, aged one.

“Makokha in unclear circumstances killed the three by setting their house ablaze while they were inside. The matter was investigated by Mumias based detectives under reference number DCI/CR/NO925/36/2021.”
