Kiraitu Murungi contracts Covid-19 as 28 patients die in 24 hours

Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi has tested positive for Covid-19.

Meru County CEC for Health Misheck Mutuma on Friday confirmed that the county boss is under isolation.

Kiraitu is among the 137 cases recorded in Meru so far

Health CAS Dr Mercy Mwangangi in her Friday brief announced that 1,354 new Covid-19 cases were recorded in the last 24 hours.

This was from a sample size of 7,732 samples tested within the same period.

This brings the total number of cases in the country to 118,889.

At the same time, Kenya recorded her highest death rates with 28 succumbing to the virus according to the CAS.

The death toll is 1982.

Last week, opposition leader Raila Odinga tested positive for Covid-19 at the Nairobi Hospital where he had been admitted.

Raila was discharged to self-isolate at home.

ODM Director of Communications Philip Etale who had accompanied Raila to his five-day Coast tour also tested positive for Covid-19 and is also under self-isolation.

This week, the country lost Muguga ward MCA Eliud Ngugi to Covid-19 and renowned bishop, Mercy Waciama who also succumbed to the disease.

On Thursday, former NTV news anchor Winnie Mukami also succumbed tot the virus at the Nairobi Hospital.

Renowned journalist Robin Njogu who was the Managing Editor for Radio Citizen also succumbed to Covid-19 on Monday at the Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi.

Njogu had been in the ICU for one month but did not make it.
