12th Parliament opens Tuesday next week with swearing in of members

Members of Parliament-elect will be sworn into office on Tuesday next week.

This is according to Leader of Majority in the 11th Parliament Aden Duale who successfully defended his Garissa Township seat.

“The only business we will conduct next week is swearing in of MPs and election of speaker and his deputy. After that, the MPs will proceed for an induction,” said Duale.

President Uhuru Kenyatta is set to be sworn into office for a second term on August 29.

Duale said that as soon as Uhuru is sworn in, there will be a special sitting of the National Assembly for Uhuru to make his first speech during his second term.

However, the date for his swearing in could change should NASA challenge the Presidential election results at the Supreme Court.

But Raila Odinga’s handlers have said they will not move to court.

Speaking shortly before Uhuru was announced the winner of the poll on Friday at the Bomas of Kenya, Siaya Senator-elect James Orengo said the matter is in the court of public opinion.

In the 12th Parliament, Jubilee enjoys a majority of 165 MPs elected on a Jubilee ticket. NASA has 118 MPs.

This, Duale said, will make his work easier should he retain his position as the leader of government business in the House.

“People accused us of having the tyranny of numbers in the last Parliament. I don’t know what they will say this time because we have been given more tyranny of members by the electorate.”

“My work this time will even be easier,” he opined.

All Jubilee elected leaders are set to hold a Parliamentary group meeting this week to agree on the line-up of those expected to lead the House in Uhuru’s second term.
