A passenger bus crashed Saturday morning in Mbaruk area along Nakuru-Naivasha highway killing 19 people.

According to a survivor, the bus was heading to Busia when it collided head-on with a trailer, as the bus driver attempted to pass a small car. The bus is said to have been hit again from behind by another trailer which was following it, killing 19 passengers at the scene.

The survivor said the bus was overloaded, and that the passengers had protested when the bus they had booked canceled the trip, and management refused to reimburse their fare.

“We demanded to have our fare reimbursed because the bus we had booked was not there but the conductors refused, forcing us to board the bus,” said the shaken survivor.

The driver of the bus is among those who survived, but he escaped immediately after the crash.

Survivors were taken to St. Mary’s hospital where they are receiving treatment.
