21 dead, scores missing as Nakuru’s Patel Dam bursts

About 21 people are feared dead after Patel Dam in Subukia burst on Wednesday night.

The flash floods that started at around 9pm swept clean several densely populated villages and left a trail of destruction.

So far Red Cross which is leading rescue operations said scores are still unaccounted for. Only 39 people have been rescued as of now.

They are receiving treatment at Bahati Sub-County and Nakuru Level 5 Hospitals. The two hospitals were on high alert last night and were ready to receive casualties.

Patel dam is located in Solai at the farm of a prominent farmer Mansukul Patel according to the Star.

From the deluge about 500 families in the area were affected.

Multi-sectoral Emergency response units were quickly dispatched last night to help in rescue operations.

Interior CS Dr. Fred Matiang’i dispatched a contingent of police officers to aid in evacuation.

Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui has promised the county government will do all it can to help.

“We assure residents that we will do our best to take affected families to safety and help them get medical attention. We have set up a centre near the scene for families to report missing members to enable us reunite them,” said the Governor in a statement.

He called upon the public to exercise caution during this rainy season

Two more dams located in the farm are currently being assessed given that the region continues to experience a heavy downpour.

Since the heavy rains began two months ago a total of 113 people have lost their lives while 260,0000 displaced as raging floods wreak havoc across the country.

Reports by the Devolution Ministry, the United Nations office in Nairobi the Red Cross indicate 10 counties are hardest hit by floods.

The Meteorological department has warned that in the next week, heavy rains will continue to pound in what is seen as a complete departure from traditional weather patterns.
