The Kenyan government has now gone after a multi-million shilling beach house owned by the Akasha in Nyali, Mombasa.
Ibrahim Abdhallah Akasha, a feared drug baron has this house registered under his name. It is here that he was buried after his demise.
The Asset Recovery Agency (ARA) in a letter dated September 29, 2020 told Director of Anti-Narcotic Police Unit Dr Hamisi Massa that the beach house was acquired through proceeds of crime.
Therefore, it should be forfeited as its ownership was transferred to his two sons.
“The above subjects committed offenses under the Narcotic Drugs. The subjects pleaded guilty to the charges and were convicted accordingly. In view of the above, the subjects have properties liable to forfeit that include a beach house in Nyali, Mombasa,” reads the letter to the Director Assets Recovery Agency according to the Standard.
His two sons Baktash Akasha and Ibrahim Akasha are serving time – 25 years and 23 years respectively – in the US after being convicted for trafficking drugs. They were extradited to the US from Kenya where they had been in custody.
Najma Baktash, wife to his Akasha’s first son moved to court to block ARA’s bid to seize the beach house.
She also asked the court to be lenient and release three golden chains confiscated from the Akasha brothers and three vehicles impounded by detectives seven years ago.
Najma told the court that some of the items were not owned by her husband who is in a US jail.
Baktash and Ibrahim were arrested at the Mombasa resident in November 2015. They were in the company of Vijayghiri Goswami, an Indian narcotics trafficker and Gulam Hussein, another Pakistani drug baron.
Besides jewellery estimated to be worth millions of shillings, police confiscated weapons, ammunition and cellphone which were used to commit drug-related crimes.
