There was drama at Tuskys Karasha in Nairobi after an employee made away with Ksh320,000.
The employee is reported to have threatened the cashier with a knife. He then disappeared with the money and has not been traced hitherto.
Sources say that the cashier had gone to the branch’s safe to collect the money at around 7 pm. It is then that the rogue employee took out his knife and ordered the day’s collection to be handed over to him.
Police are not investigating the issue even as it emerged that the CCTV server at the supermarket was down at the time. It is alleged that it was destroyed and the incident was not captured by surveillance cameras.
Staff questioning has started with those on duty on the material day recording statements. Detectives are expected to grill more employees this week.
Nairobi police boss Augustine Nthumbi said they have not made any arrest yet but they are closing in on some leads.
In November last year, Tuskys chief cashiers at Greenspan, Kenyatta Avenue, Matasia, T-Mall, Imara, Ongata Rongai and Eldoret reportedly resigned while taking with them cash from daily sales.
“I have just decided to reduce my unpaid salary and paid myself ninety thousand shillings. In case anyone has an issue, kindly deduct this from my salary,” said one of the cashiers in her resignation letter.
The theft comes amid reports of a secret investor rumoured to be pumping Ksh2.1 billion in the revival of the supermarket chain that has since gone bankrupt.
Out of it 64 branches spread across the country, Tuskys has only five branches running currently. It has been fighting suits over rent arrears and stalled pay to its suppliers.
