Admins whose sites, groups post political content are required to state their allegiance- Kenya gvt

Social media accounts propagating hate speech will be pulled down within a day after the government is notified, newly published guidelines by Communications Authority (CA) state.

“Social media service providers shall be required to pull down accounts used in disseminating undesirable political contents on their platform that have (sic) brought to their attention within 24 hours,” say the guidelines.

The guidelines were published on Friday in a move to tame undesirable political content spread through social media, Daily Nation reports.

Lately, social media users have been cautioned against posting political content with ethnic contempt, harassment, defamation and incitement to violence.

CA has proactively stepped in taming the use of social media after concerns from several quarters that the platform has been converted to a hate powerhouse.

Administrators of social media sites are now required to closely monitor and sieve content published on their sites.

In addition, administrators whose sites post political content are required to state their allegiance.

If unsure of whether the content is inciting or not, administrators will have to seek approval from National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) which will take up to 24 hours.

Political parties have not been spared either as they have been warned against spreading inflammatory political content through the use of short message services (SMS).
