Having been in the US for the last 42 years, the only thing a 74-year old Kenyan brought back home is a pack of clothes and a brown envelope with phone numbers, The Standard reports.

The man who requested not to be named was among 5 Kenyans and 67 Somali nationals who were deported on Friday by the US state Department of Immigration.

He narrates that he moved to the US in 1975.  He has mastered the art of a deep nasal drawl — a twang – English that suggests he has been in States for quite a while.

The 74-year old, prior to his deportation had been arrested for drunk driving and charged in court. He was, however, arrested after paying the fine and held in detention for two weeks before boarding a plane back to Kenya.

“The judge fined me $1,240 which I paid but immediately I got out of the courtroom, I was re-arrested and sent to a detention camp,” he said.

The seven Kenyans are Kihanya Charles, Bota Patrick, Githua Paul, Mose Eliud, Nyachae Bosibori Jackline, Ongori Vincent and Seet Sila.

According to JKIA police station OCPD Zipporah Waweru, the group of 71 who were deported had been involved in criminal activities including drunk driving, assault, and robbery.

“These were not ordinary people who were hounded out of the streets and then deported. They were involved in criminal acts and some had been in detention in the US correctional facilities.”

Before they were released to join their families, they recorded statements with Directorate of Criminal Investigation.
