Three administration police officers have died after a vehicle they were traveling in hit a landmine planted by terrorists in Kulan area of Liboi in Garissa County.

The Wednesday terror attack happened around 6:30 am leaving the three dead while three others were left with serious injuries. They were airlifted to Nairobi for specialized treatment.

The Toyota Landcruiser they were traveling in was reduced to a shell.

North Eastern Regional Coordinator Mohamud Saleh while confirming the incident said Al-Shabaab insurgents have now resulted to planting IEDs on roads as their entry points have been sealed by security agents

“The militants have found it difficult to carry out attacks as they used to because all the entry points along the border have been closed. They have now resorted to planting IEDs at selected roads to target security officers,” said saleh as reported by the Star.

He said security agents in the area will heighten their patrols and arrest anyone found to be abetting the acts of terrorism.

The attack comes barely a day after Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinett warned of militants getting in the country.

The Liboi attack also comes barely hours after President Uhuru Kenyatta sent out a condolence message to U.K’s Prime Minister following a terror attack that left 22 dead and scores of others with serious injuries in Manchester.

In his condolence message, Uhuru noted that he knows firsthand the pain of losing lives and property to a terror attack.

The attack is believed to be retaliatory in nature following successful offensives conducted by KDF soldiers in Somalia in the past few months in wiping out the militia group.
