Alarm as 52 students from Busia contract COVID-19

A red flag has been raised after 52 students from Busia County tested positive for COVID-19.

On Tuesday, Busia Governor Sospeter Ojamong said the situation is alarming.

At Kolanya Boys High School in Teso North Constituency, out of 100 samples taken from the school, 52 returned positive while a further six tested from teachers were positive.

Two others were from support staff.

In the same county of Busia, at least 16 health workers have tested positive for COVID-19 and has recorded a death toll of 10.

Following the cases, the Busia Governor said that the county has heightened containment measures in the county.

“Lack of finances was hampering the fight against the virus. But we have scaled up many activities aimed at keeping the virus at bay,” said Ojaamong.

Ojamong, however, noted that surveillance is still a very big challenge in the county.

Busia being a birdr county into Uganda since runs a high risk of rapid spread of the virus due to transit trucks between Kenyan and Uganda.

This comes as 492 new COVID-19 cases were recorded in the last 24 hours bringing the total cases in the country to 57,093.

A total of 3,728 samples were tested on Tuesday.

Out of the new cases, 474 were Kenyans, 18 foreigners while the youngest was a one-year-old baby and the oldest 88 years old.

Another 404 patients recovered bringing the total recoveries to 37,846.

Sadly, 12 people succumbed to the virus bringing the total deaths to 1.039.
