Babu Owino loses Embakasi East Seat

Embakasi East MP Paul Ongili alias Babu Owino has lost his seat.

The High Court on Friday through Judge Joseph Sergon ruled that the election was not free and fair.

He ordered Babu to pay Sh5 million in costs.

Jubilee’s Francis Mureithi had petitioned Babu’s election citing myriad poll irregularities.

Sergon had earlier ordered for vote recount where Babu emerged the winner with 46, 817 votes while Mureithi garnered 42, 501 votes.

The MP through his lawyer Jackson Awele in final submissions on Wednesday urged the court not to nullify his win over minor irregularities.

“You cannot have a petition that makes 100 allegations of irregularities and proves only one, and on this ground, I pray that the petition is dismissed,” he told Judge Joseph Sergon according to the Star.

Speaking shortly after the ruling at the Milimani Law Courts, Babu said President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto influenced the court’s decision.

“I would like to state clearly that the whole nation knows what happened. The whole nation knows that this is a war between Babu Owino and President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto,” charged the MP according to Citizen Digital.

“The whole nation knows that I have been highly critical of the president and his deputy. It is sad that the Executive is using its influence to arm-twist the Judiciary. What can’t kill you, can only make you stronger. If Uhuru and Ruto decide to come and vie in Embakasi East, I will beat them yesterday in the morning,” he added.
