Blow to Raila as ODM Vice-Chair resigns after botched nominations

By Pharis Kinyua: Jamhuri News

The Orange Democratic Party (ODM) has suffered a major blow with the resignation of its Vice-chairman, Dr. Paul Otuoma.

The Funyula MP announced his departure from ODM in a resignation letter he wrote to ODM Secretary-General Agnes Zani and copied to the Registrar of Political Parties Lucy Ndung’u.

Part of the letter as forwarded to the office of the Registrar of Political Parties read: “I am a life party member number 000032 having been issued with a life membership certificate. I would wish to resign and withdraw from the party with immediate effect.”

The fallout between Otuoma and ODM was occasioned by botched primaries in Busia County where he is vying for the governorship.

Otuoma said he no longer feels in the right place after the Party’s National Elections Board Chaired by Judith Pareno said there would be a re-run of the primaries in Teso North and South constituencies where there were massive discrepancies favoring incumbent Sospeter Ojamong.

Ojamong garnered 92,358 votes against Dr. Otuoma’s 63,752.

Addressing his supporters earlier in the week, the Funyula MP pointed out that: “This whole situation is becoming stale. I have already made the decision. I will run for the governorship seat with or without the ODM certificate. They are trying to introduce a tribal angle which has a long-time effect to our people.”
