A new dawn has set in for Nairobi County with the Kenya Revenue Authority being the designated tax collector until 2022 when Kenya goes for the next general elections.

City Hall formerly appointed the KRA as the county’s taxman starting March 16 in a gazette notice published on Friday.

KRA is expected to collect parking fees, cess, land rates, penalties among other charges levied by the county government of Nairobi.

The county collects about Sh11 billion annually. Nairobi Finance CEC Allan Igambi in response to the new directive said KRA’s appointment by City Hall was within citing Section 160 of the Public Finance Management Act, 2012.

The move by City Hall comes a short while after Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko handed over some key functions to the national government through Devolution CS Eugene Wamalwa.

Sonko handed over the functions to the national government in what he says was inspired by the desire to end the crisis in the county government.

The signing of the agreement was held at State House on February 25 and was witnessed by President Uhuru Kenyatta and Senate Speaker Kenneth Lusaka.

Health, Transport, Planning and development services and County public works are some of the functions reverted to the national government.

KRA now seeks to raise the revenue collected in Nairobi as it has been declining, a red flag raised by the Controller of Budget.
