Blogger and Youtuber Edgar Obare had found is cooling his heels in police custody following his Thursday arrest.
Reports from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) indicate that Obare has been detained for blackmail and fraudster charges. He has been recruiting young women to work in his alleged extortion ring.
He is alleged to have blackmailed a high-flying governor together with his co-accused Desy Achieng with the intent to extort Ksh10 million from him.
The two are said to have been plotting how to stalk the governor and get grounds to extort money from him through blackmail.
“Detectives from the Cybercrime unit have uncovered an underworld network of criminals involving young ladies recruited by Obare, to stalk prominent personalities in political, business and religious circles for monetary exploitation. The ladies are then coached by Obare, on how to ensnare the victims into their traps then extort unimaginable sums of money from them,” said the DCI.
DCI revealed that Obare shared the governor’s number with his co-accused asking her to lie to the Governor that she is pregnant with his child. She would then ask for money threatening to expose the governor for sleeping with her.
Achieng did this but the governor who is yet to be named did not respond. It is then that the lady told the governor that she would leak their photos together.
“When the governor did not respond, she was instructed to threaten him that she would share photos that they had allegedly taken in compromising situations but the governor did not respond,” DCI added.
Obare, in his usual style, took to his social media pages and accused the governor of impregnating a woman and refusing to take responsibility for this.
Edgar is said to have taken to his social media pages with screenshot of the alleged conversation accusing the governor of impregnating a lady and failing to take responsibility.
Interestingly, the lady would turn on Obare and she reported him to the police. She confessed that she has never had a relationship with the county boss and was only recruited by Obare to do his dirty work.
“Fearing the repercussions of Edgar’s actions, she reported the matter to DCI offices in Nyali. Detectives have since established that the lady isn’t pregnant as she had claimed,” the DCI added.
