A deaf couple that dated via text messages tied the knot on Saturday at Kandara in Murang’a in a ceremony presided over by a deaf pastor.

William Mwaura, 29, finally said “I do” to his fiancée Phyllis Wawira, 28, at the ACK Kang’eng’u in Kandara after 18 months of courtship.

The best couple to Mwaura and Wawira is also from the deaf community, something that made the wedding so interesting.

An interpreter Emmanuel Muigai helped in translation during the wedding service. He is a member of the Deaf Mission Fellowship in Nakuru County

He told the amused congregants at the church that the two met in Embu during a church service for the deaf. They are staunch followers of Deaf Mission Fellowship Church.

Wawira hails from Embu County while Mwaura comes from Kandara in Murang’a.

“After interacting, the two church members became friends, with their friendship evolving into a love relationship and that’s how a courtship began,” Muigai, told Daily Nation.

The power couple would date via text messages until the love grew so deep that they decided to tie the knot.

Mwaura, a carpenter by profession, though the interpreter, said he knew he found the right woman for him when he found Wawira who is a hairdresser by profession.

“When I met my wife, one-and-a-half years ago, I felt new and I knew I had met my helper,” Mwaura happily said.

The deaf community that had graced the wedding ceremony however, accused government of negligence and sidelining them on national issues.

They said in many national government functions, an interpreter has not been there.

They also urged media stations to enlarge the images of sign language interpreters during news time.
