Doctors on Monday issued a two weeks strike notice citing that the government has failed to address their grievances.

The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) on Monday said that they have been in talks with the government and nothing is forthcoming.

KMPDU secretary-general Dr Chibanzi Mwachonda said it is sad that six months after the pandemic, they have not been able to get comprehensive medical insurance.

“Six months into the pandemic the government is yet to fulfill its pledge on provision of comprehensive medical insurance and compensation for those who have lost their lives in the line of duty,”Mwachonda said.

“On the contrary, the incentive of an enhanced Covid-19 allowance has been withdrawn with no commitment or indication of its payment despite the increased risk that all healthcare workers continue to face,” he added.

The government is still yet to respond to the ultimatum even as Kenya on Monday recorded 102 new COVID-19 cases.

The total number of coronavirus cases in the country is now 35,205.

Health CAS Rashid Aman said that a sample of 2,668 was tested in the last 24 hours, bringing the cumulative tests to 477,145.

All of the new cases were Kenyans except nine who were foreigners.

The new cases comprise 51 males and 41 females the youngest one being a one -year-old infant while the oldest was 86 years old.

Nairobi, as usual, had the highest number of cases at 41 in the last 24 hours.

Kitui had 11 cases, Kiambu 7, Mombasa 6,  Turkana 4 and Nyeri 4.

Some other 80 patients recovered from the disease, bringing the total number of recoveries in the country so far to 21,310.

Thirty of those discharged were from the home-based programme, while 50 were discharged from various health facilities.

The number of fatalities rose to 599 after another two patients succumbed to the virus.
