Former Independent and Electoral Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioner Dr Roselyn Akombe has left the US for Ethiopia.
For the last 14 years, Akombe worked in New York with the United Nations political wing.
She was UN’s Chief of Policy at the Policy and Mediation Division, Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs.
On Monday, she announced an end to her stay in New York where her office handled weighty political matters from many countries across the world.
Akombe announced that the was moving back to Ethiopia to focus on her new position as the Governance & Peacebuilding Africa Coordinator with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
“After 14 years on the political side of the @UN family, glad to switch to my other passion –development. Thrilled to join @UNDP today as the Governance & Peacebuilding Africa Coordinator at the Regional Hub in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia,” she tweeted.
Before her debut career with the UN, Akombe worked with the African Union as an economist. She is also a big name in the world of civil society.
She is a strong defender of human rights and social justice.
Akombe covertly left Kenya for the US after the 2017 bungled presidential polls. She decried threats to her life before fleeing to New York where she continued with her UN job.
Recently, she has become a big critic of Kenya’s governance system and relives the murder of the late Chris Msando.
Msando was IEBC’s IT manager but was murdered days to the August 8, 2017 polls.
Akombe has been vocal accusing the state of doing little to bring his killers to book.
“Today, you should have turned 48 years old. But you were silenced, for standing up for electoral justice. To the Msando family, we cannot imagine your pain, especially during this festive season. But be assured that we’ll never tire to seek for justice,” she tweeted on December 28, 2020.
