Despite a flashy lifestyle Nairobi County Senator Mike Sonko exhibits, he literally takes home sh1000 ($10) at every end of the month out of his salary of sh1.1 million ($10, 000).
He revealed this on Wednesday evening when he appeared on Jeff Koinange Live show on Citizen TV. Though he did not disclose the source of his wealth; he defended himself on his flashy lifestyle stating that his money “comes from God”.
Why he takes home a mere sh1000, he explained, is because he has assets like fire engines, hearses, ambulances that he bought through a loan.
Thus, his salary pays off the huge loan.
“As we are talking now, I have been earning a salary of sh1000 for the last five years. I earn a salary of sh1000 bob out of a salary of sh1.1 million shillings simply because I have attached my salary because I have acquired fire engines on loan; I have acquired ambulances on loan, hearses operating in all parts of Kenya from Nairobi on loan” he said.
He also said there are companies that have been supporting his humanitarian course and fuel his cars for free under their account.
He refuted claims that he is a drug baron saying he has never been charged with any drug offense.
Sonko said the rumor that he is a drug baron started off in the 10th Parliament when served as Makadara MP and it was just propaganda from his opponents.
“I have never sold drugs,” said the Nairobi gubernatorial hopeful terming the allegation as attempts to assassinate his character.
Sonko also extended an olive branch to his political opponent Peter Kenneth, saying he is ready to work with him after Nairobi residents nominated him to vie for Nairobi Governor on a Jubilee ticket.
“I would be willing to work with one Peter Kenneth; I have no problem with him. Let him come to the table we agree. If he is willing to work with me, the doors are open. Let him come and we work together.” Sonko said
