Former Chief of Defence Forces General (Rtd) Samson Mwathethe has built a multi-million shilling church in his hometown of Ganze in Kilifi County.

Mwathethe built Christ The King Church as a gift for his village after serving for decades in the forces.

On Sunday, June 6, Christ The King church held its first service. Reverend Lawrence Dena, the first Bishop of the ACK Diocese of Malindi led the consecration service.

Mwathethe also attended the service alongside Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi.

“Joined other faithful in witnessing the consecration of a modern building Christ The King Church in Jila, Ganze Ward, Ganze Sub County, which was a brainchild of General (Rtd) Samson Mwathethe and a team of his like-minded friends,” Kingi tweeted.

Mwathethe said that the church plays a crucial role in shaping the society which informed his intent to put up Christ The King Church.

For the ex-KDF boss, spiritual growth is something he takes seriously.

Mwathethe was appointed to the position in 2015 by President Uhuru Kenyatta. He was known for his soft-spoken nature contrary to what many expected of a man commanding the country’s army.

Just before he retired in 2020, he made it clear that he was would not join politics.

“When it was announced that I will be retiring people started making suggestions that I join politics but I will not go that route. I am a military officer. Military and politics do not go together,” Mwathethe said.
