Kenya’s coronavirus tally has shot to 1,029 after 66 people tested positive in the last 24 hours.
While releasing the numbers on Wednesday at Afya House, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe said this is the highest number Kenya has recorded in a single day since the first case was confirmed in March.
Kagwe who was flanked by East African Community (EAC) Cabinet Secretary Adan Mohamed and German Ambassador to Kenya Annett Günther said that 30 of these cases are in Mombasa while 26 are in Nairobi.
Kajiado which has seen a spike in the number of infections due to transit drivers from the Tanzania border in Namanga recorded three cases.
Kagwe also extended the cessation of movement in Eastleigh and Old Town areas in Nairobi and Mombasa counties respectively up to June 6.
The two areas were placed on total lockdown a fortnight ago after the number of new infections rose exponentially.
In the same breath, Germany donated two mobile laboratories.
CS Adan thanked the German Embassy for the donation citing that Kenya’s power in taming COVID-19 lies in working together with other nations.
“We shall use these at our borders in Namanga, Isebania among others. This will go along way,” he said.
Ambassador Günther noted “Covid-19 is a crisis that tests us on how we treat ourselves. We can only beat the pandemic when we work together,” she said.
“Two of these labs will enable Kenya to detect communicable diseases.”
