Unknown gunmen shot at two police officers on Sunday around 10:30am outside St Paul’s ACK Church in Ukunda, Kwale County.
The attackers later fled with two rifles belonging to the slain policemen who were manning the church as the service was going on.
They are reported to have used a motorcycle to escape.
Kwale County Commissioner Kutswa Olaka said one of his officers died while receiving treatment in hospital.
“One officer died while receiving treatment at Diani Beach Hospital and the other succumbed to his injuries while he was being rushed to a Mombasa Hospital,” said the County Commissioner.
Security has since been beefed up in the area.
Police are also pursuing the attackers.
Kwale Governor Salim Mvurya called on security agencies to ensure the county is secure.
Ten congregants sustained minor injuries as they tried to scamper for safety after the shooting of the officers.
