A herder grazing his cattle within Nairobi National Park was mauled to death by two lions early Monday morning.

Weldon Kirui, 18, was in the company of seven other herders grazing their cattle in the park during the incident according to a joint report by police and Kenya Wildlife Service officers.

The two lions ate him up. Only his head and legs were recovered from the scene according to the Standard.

Kirui’s remains were taken to the mortuary.

Langata police boss Elijah Mwangi said they arrested the other herders for grazing in the park which is illegal.

“When they were attacked by the lions, they screamed for help and by the time KWS officials arrived there, the victim had been eaten up. The other herders managed to drive away their cattle but they would be charged for illegal grazing within the park,” Mwangi stated.

It has emerged that some herders drive their cattle to the park to graze at night.

This is illegal according to Mwangi.

Last year, a stray lion from the park attacked a pedestrian along Mombasa road and left him with severe injuries on his arm.

KWS officials killed the lion after people gathered around. They averted more death as it was likely to charge towards the onlookers and kill them.
