Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie in Kenya to mark World Refugee Day

Revered Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie has visited Kenya to celebrate World Refugee Day.

Jolie, 42, is United Nation’s High Commission for Refugee (UNHCR) special envoy.

She jetted in on Tuesday and headed to Heshima Safe House within the city where she met adolescent refugees who have been subjected to sexual assault in the past.

Jolie was petrified after meeting a young refugee girl whom she described to be of the same age with her eldest son having a young infant born as a result of rape.

She gave words of hope and encouragement to at least 20 rape survivors before moving to International Peace Support in Nairobi where she addressed military and police personnel involved in UN and African peacekeeping operations.

The Hollywood actress emphasized on the need to have men and women in Special Forces understand the need to end vices such as rape and sexual assault to refugees during missions.

“It meant a lot to hear military gender advisers and officers say what they believe and what they want others to understand,” said Jolie.

“On behalf of victims of sexual violence, I want to plead with all you to take this issue seriously and personally, to use your position and your influence to spread this message on all the missions on which you serve,” she went on.

She launched a campaign against preventing sexual violence in 2012.

Since its inception in 2012, a total of 17, 000 military officers have been trained on sexual violence issues.
