Classic 105 breakfast show host Maina Kageni is with no doubt among Kenya’s most successful radio personalities.

However, his journey to stardom is nothing short of puzzling.

In the ’90s, Maina travelled to the UK to further his studies. When he got there, he decided to get into business and became a trucker.

He would later return to Kenya years later without a degree, much to the disappointment of his mother who never forgave him until recently.

Maina then organized a concert and brought UK deejays to Kenya.

This was the beginning of his long journey to the radio industry.

Shortly after the concert, he was given a slot at Capital FM where he worked briefly and rose to a news presenter. Before long, he was poached by Nation FM.

While at Nation FM, he got an invite from Radio Africa Group CEO Patrick Quaco and here, his life made a complete U-Turn.

He recently narrated to Bonga na Jalas how he bagged a salary six times more than what he was getting at Nation FM.

“I get a call from Patrick Quarcoo (RAG owner)…that time the phrase was (to) make the ‘big switch to Kiss 100’. So we talked about my salary. Nation were paying me 60k (Ksh60, 000), so I told him I was earning Ksh180, 000 he said ‘you need to come’ and he doubled it.

He gave me 360k and said join Kiss 100,” he recalled.

What happened next, he narrated, is something he won’t forget in a lifetime.

The Classic FM breakfast show host walked for a few metres but the excitement of a new, well-paying job made him run like a bullet train to Nation centre.

He informed his then-boss Wilfred Kiboro who gave him the go-ahead to make more money at Radio Africa.

More than a decade later, Maina has been a popular voice for Classic 105. His Maina and King’ang’i breakfast show remain highly popular as it is controversial.
