IEBC Commissioner Dr. Roselyn Akombe has allayed death threats on her life.
She says unknown people have been threatening her brother who has since left the country together with his wife and three children.
Akombe’s brother, 34, name withheld for security reasons, left the country through the Namanga border last week on Tuesday.
“He left the country last week when the threats became too much,” the commissioner told Daily Nation.
The threats to her family members, she says, are a plot to intimidate her for ostensibly not singing to the “official tune”.
She says it is sad that there are quarters trying to intimidate her using her brother.
“He is a man who loves this country and had always resisted our attempts to get him something to do abroad. I feel responsible for it. It feels bad but what can you do about it?”
With the security threat on her life, the commissioner remarks she feels so vulnerable more than any other moment in her life.
“I have been to Somalia, Yemen, Jordan, Iraq and even Libya for security assessment missions but on a personal basis I have never felt this insecure,” says she.
Akombe toured these countries when she worked with the United Nation’s Department of Political Affairs as an Under-Secretary.
She has not reported the matter to police for reasons she could not disclose.
The Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet said he is not aware of the threats.
“I don’t know anything about what you have just told me. Nothing at all.”
With the soaring debate of the disputed August 8 polls, opposition claimed that security for a section of independent commissioners including IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati was withdrawn.
However, Police Spokesman George Kinoti dismissed the reports.
European Union Election Observation Mission in an interim report on Thursday called for enhancement of security for IEBC staff.
