The highly anticipated ‘swearing-in’ of Raila Odinga and his running mate Kalonzo Musyoka has finally happened.

However, the event which was to go down in history as a monumental one was dealt a blow after Kalonzo and other co-principals Moses Wetangula and Musalia Mudavadi failed to show up at Uhuru Park where hundreds of supporters had thronged to witness the historic event.

In an apology, Raila told the elated supporters that Kalonzo could not make it to Uhuru Park but “they are together.”

“Kalonzo Musyoka is not here with us. But he is together with us in this. He will be sworn in later,” Raila told the crowd amid applause.

It was highly anticipated that Kalonzo would be alongside Raila during the oath taking while Wetangula and Mudavadi were expected to flank the two principals.

In yet another twist, Raila who arrived at Uhuru Park around 2:30pm took the oath as “The People’s President”.

The oath was administered by National Resistance Movement General Lawyer Miguna Miguna.

Earlier NASA CEO Norman Magaya had said Raila will be sworn in as the “President of Republic of Kenya” and not the President of the People’s Assembly-a resistance wing for the opposition.

Raila is expected to give a formal statement through the press on his next step after taking the oath.

Political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi responded to the missing of other NASA co-principals at the event terming it as “betrayal”.

“We predicted the Nasa betrayal in June 2017. Now Uhuru must charge Raila with taking an illegal oath under section 61 of the penal code. Zero option,” he said via his twitter handle.
