Nairobi County Governor Mike Sonko has cautioned other governors against inordinate sacking of county employees.

The Governor said in his county, only corrupt county government workers will face the sack

Addressing a press conference at City Hall on Tuesday, the Governor said that contrary to what he has seen in other counties, he is not firing inherited county staff for political vendetta.

But, anyone found to be engaged in corrupt dealings will ultimately be sent home.

“In many counties workers have been fired but we will not do that here in Nairobi. Let us stop sacking workers just to settle political vendetta,” he said as quoted by Daily Nation.

He suspended the county’s chief cashier and some other officers who were found with unbanked sh7 million last week.

In many counties across the country, incoming governors have sent home county staff in a move seen to be politically motivated.

He said he has retained staff members working for former Governor Evans Kidero including his “tea guy”.

“I have retained the employees and even the guy who was preparing tea for Mr.Kidero is still working for me. Even the typists and receptionists.”

The Governor said he knows of count staff that openly campaigned and supported Kidero but he will not sack them because the political season is now over.

“I know those who did not vote for me and supported my opponent but elections are now over. Let us work together to the betterment of Nairobi. Politicking is now over,” Sonko urged.

He asked the county inspectorate department to be professional in their work as they have in the past dented the image of the county government.

He dispelled fears of sacking them en masse.
