Kenya okeys first COVID-19 vaccine trials

Kenya on Thursday recorded 143 new coronavirus cases bringing the total number of cases to 35,603, Health CAS Rashid Aman announced.

Some 3,854 samples were tested in the last 24 hours, bringing the cumulative tests to 485,836.

Out of the new 143 new cases, 14 were foreigners.
Dr Aman who spoke at the Mathari National Teaching and Referral hospital said the youngest was a nine-month-old infant while the oldest was 83 years old

Some 490 patients recovered from the disease, bringing the total number of recoveries in the country so far to 22,047.

Those from the home-based programme were 278 while 242 were discharged from various hospitals in the country.

However, the number of fatalities rose to 612 after another five patients succumbed to the virus.

Still, on matters coronavirus, the government gave a nod to the first COVID-19 vaccine trials set to be conducted in Kenya.

The vaccine developed by Oxford University was okayed for trial in Kenya by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board on Tuesday.

The trials will be carried out by the Kenya Medical Research Institute (Kemri) in Kilifi and Mombasa countries.

Kenya becomes the second sub-Sharan Africa country to have the COVID-19 vaccine trials conducted.
