Kenya’s COVID-19 cases are now at 535 after 45 people tested positive in a span of 24 hours.

The 45 were part of 1077 samples tested by the Ministry of Health.

Health CS Mutahi Kagwe said that 29 of the cases are in Nairobi, Mombasa (11), Wajir (5) and one foreigner. Thirty are male while 15 are female.

All the 29 cases are in Eastleigh which has a total of 63 coronavirus cases so far.

Nine more people have also been discharged. The total number of those discharged is 182.

Kagwe said that special attention will be given to Eastleigh, Kawangware and Old Town areas which have in the past few weeks become coronavirus hotspots.

“We need to take action in those areas,” he stated.

Since the first coronavirus case was reported on March 12, there have never been a high number of confirmed cases as there is today.

This comes as the World Health Organization cleared Kenya to take part in the trials of Remdesivir, a COVID-19 drug approved for use in the US.

A small number of patients will take part in the trial.

“The compounds we are going to deploy of course will depend on how available they are in terms of compassionate use of the different drugs and protocols and the clinical presentation of our cases,” Health director-general Patrick Amoth stated.
