A Kenyan university student has been detained at an Indian hospital where he has been receiving cancer treatment over Sh1 million outstanding hospital bill.

Emmanuel Otieno, alias Jadudi, a student at the University of Nairobi, has been detained at Apollo Entrepreneur Hospital in India.

His Father Evans Ouma told Nairobi News that his son has been at the hospital since February 20 where he was scheduled to undergo surgery.

Jadudi, first shot into limelight in 2015 after Jackson Biko, a writer with Business daily, highlighted his condition which was then a brain tumor. At the time, Jadudi had undergone seven brain surgeries.

Touched by his suffering, Kenyans raised Sh6.4 million in two days to offset his medical bill.

Jadudi was supposed to return home last week on Monday but could not be discharged due to the pending bill at the hospital.

“His mother who takes care of him has told me that he is gaining stability and can now fly back to Kenya. But the hospital insists that it has to be paid Sh1 million before being discharged,” Ouma said.

No medication is being provided to Jadudi until the pending hospital bill is paid.

“My son still requires medication but he can no longer receive it unless the money is paid,” said Jadudi’s father.

He once again appealed to Kenyans to help him get his son back to Kenya where he can get treatment from local hospitals.

“I appeal to well-wishers to contribute funds my son comes back to Kenya so that we can take him to any of our facilities. I am financially challenged,” said the retired civil servant.
