A Kenyan family from Mombasa which was stuck in India for over one and a half years has finally returned to the country.
Walter Njoroge and his daughter, teenage daughter Fiona Wanjiku reunited with family and friends early Wednesday morning after jetting back from India.
Njoroge through the help of Kenyans managed to raise Ksh3.2 million which was the pending hospital bill and the main reason why he spent close to two years in India.
They travelled to India in 2019 for Wanjiku’s surgery to correct kidney failure when the rain started beating.
Njoroge sank into an abyss of debts as he tried to raise money to cater for her daughter’s medical expenses.
Wanjiku was in Form One when they left for the surgery in India for her second kidney transplant. Her first kidney transplant was in 2011.
They incurred a hospital bill of Ksh11 million and have managed to clear part of it and remained with Ksh3.2 million bill.
Their appeal was taken up by Ndungu Nyoro, a philanthropist who rallied thousands of Kenyans to contribute towards the Wanjiku’s discharge which they gladly did.
In October, Njoroge said he was overwhelmed as the bill soared, something he did not expect.
“We have overstayed in India and now we are overwhelmed financially. We have gross running expenses of over Ksh.10 Million, thankfully the medical cover catered for most of the bill.
“We have expenses of covering for new tickets because the initial ones expired and we also have daily expenses,” Njoroge explained as his story was aired by Citizen TV.
Their house in Mombasa was put locked by the landlord over failure to pay rent for more than one and a half years.
