A Kenyan-born Italian man who worked as a fruit picker in Australia is to be deported after performing a lewd act in front of a minor.

Casali, 27, was arrested and charged at Bundaberg District Court where he pleaded guilty to three counts including touching himself sexually in public at a supermarket, trespassing at a woman’s home in Brisbane, and indecent treatment of a child under 12.

At one time, Casali is said to have performed the indecent act in front of an eight-year-old girl at a supermarket aisle. On a separate incident, a woman woke up to find Casali in her bed having stealthily entered the home. The man escaped through the window after she yelled at him.

“It was a deliberate act. He had shown sexual interest in the child. It was not an isolated incident as he did a similar offense in the Bundaberg IGA store,” said Crown prosecutor Melissa Wilson.

“Exposing an eight-year-old girl to an indecent act carries a maximum penalty of 20 years. That shows how serious it is,”   “You went into a lady’s home and got into her bed and went to sleep. That would have been a very frightening experience for that lady.” She added.

Casali was sentenced to 325 days in jail, but the prosecutor backdated it to July 1, 2016, when he was arrested. Having served more than the sentenced period, the judge said he believed this was appropriate since he would be deported on his release.

Defence barrister Peter Richards said Casali was born in Kenya but raised in Venice by an Italian couple.

“I will be in custody until Immigration comes to deport me,” Casali said through an interpreter.
