A 17-year-old Kenyan teenager, Twahir Ali Alwi, beat eight competitors in the International Quran Memorization Competition to emerge the winner.

Alwi recited the Quran during the event televised by Zanzibar Cable Television at Jamiu Zinjibar Mosque in Zanzibar on Sunday.

He walked away with Tsh4.5 million (Ksh220,000), an automatic sewing machine and an iron box after his win in Zanzibar.

The teenager who is a Form One student at Madrasatul Munawwarah according to Daily Nation beat his rivals from Comoro, Uganda, Malawi, Zanzibar, DR Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, and Tanzania.

Muslim Mercy Youth (MMY) secretary-general Said Abeid impressed by Alwi’s mastery of the Quran said he will participate in the East and Central Quran Competition to be held at Makadara grounds in Mombasa on Saturday and Sunday.

His win in Zanzibar was preceded by a similar sterling performance after winning in the MMY organized competition held in April at Tahdhib Muslim School.
