Rose Achieng escorted to court in a wheelchair

A Kenyan woman in Malaysia has been found guilty of drug trafficking and sentenced to death by the Malaysian High Court.

The 40-year-old Ms. Rose Achieng Ojala is reported to have stuffed three 400gm methamphetamine capsules into her private parts and had swallowed 68 more capsules as she traveled from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in November 2013.

According to Malaysian Daily Express, Ms. Achieng seemed suspicious during regular luggage check upon arriving at Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

She was stopped by immigration officers for a search that revealed the hidden methamphetamine that weighed more than 20g, under her underwear.

Achieng was charged with trafficking the drugs and she admitted the offense saying that her boyfriend had stuffed them into her vagina minutes before she boarded the flight.
Achieng claimed she was pregnant and was taken to the Serdang Hospital, where an X-ray examination revealed that she had swallowed 68 more capsules of methamphetamine weighing over 380gm.

The judge Wong Teck Meng, delivered the ruling on Sunday sentencing Achieng to death. “You are found guilty and there is no other punishment under Section 39(B) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1962 except the death sentence,” the judge ruled.

Achieng was also sentenced to three years in jail for being in possession of 20.7g of methamphetamine under her underwear.

In mitigation, Counsel Suzanawati Ismail argued that Achieng is a single mother and has three children aged between 4 and 15 who depended on her.

Achieng had passed out before the proceedings, prompting court officials to take her to the courtroom in a wheelchair.

In his conviction to Achieng, Judge Wong said the prosecution had proved the case beyond reasonable doubt and the punishment was right.
