Coronavirus fear in Kenya has escalated amid reports of people who tested positive mingling freely with other Kenyans.
It has been established that a priest who attended a funeral ceremony last week in Siaya flew in from Rome, Italy tested positive for coronavirus on Sunday.
Siaya County Commissioner Micheal Ole Tialal said that the priest interacted with his family in Nyasanda before heading out to Seg to see another priest.
Already, a team of health officers has been sent to the area and all those who interacted with the priest asked to self-quarantine to contain further spread.
“We are going to get more information immediately we get in touch with the family members on where else the priest visited during his visit to Siaya but at the moment we have only identified Ugunja and Sega”.
“The health officers have been sent to all those areas where it’s believed that the priest visited to curb a further spread,” Tialal said as the Star reports.
At the coast, Kilifi Deputy Governor Gideon Saburi has been forced into quarantine after which he will be prosecuted.
Saburi tested positive for coronavirus after his trip from Germany on March 7 and went ahead to interact with people.
Governor Amason Kingi who has been in self-isolation albeit testing negative said a team has been dispatched to contain all those who came into contact with his deputy.
Kenyans on social media were all fired up and criticized Mr. Saburi for putting hundreds of lives in peril.
In his defense according to Daily Nation, Kilifi South MP Ken Chonga , said that “He (Saburi) told me that when he landed from Berlin, Germany, he took himself to Mombasa hospital where he was admitted for three days, had medical check-up and was later discharged after doctors ascertained he had a clean bill of health.”
This comes as Kenya registered its 16th coronavirus case triggering tough talk from President Uhuru Kenyatta and Health CS Mutahi Kagwe.
During a presser at State House on Monday, Uhuru said all those who go against set guidelines by the Ministry of Health will be dealt with accordingly.
He called on all Kenyans to take self-isolation and social distancing seriously and also practice the highest standard of hygiene to contain the spread of the virus.
