Kenyans have reacted to the unexpected resignation of Nairobi County Deputy Governor Polycarp Igathe a few months after he took office.

Igathe on Friday sent shock waves after he said he can no longer work with Governor Mike Sonko since he does not trust him enough.

The two were elected under Jubilee ticket in the August 8 polls.

Igathe’s entry to Nairobi politics had been touted to be a game changer given his flawless record in the private sector.

Via his official twitter handle, he said: “Dear Nairobians, it is with a heavy heart that I resign my seat as elected Deputy Governor of Nairobi City County effective 1pm on 31st Jan 2018. I regret I have failed to earn the trust of the Governor to enable me to drive Admin & Management of the county.”

This triggered a string of reactions from Kenyans with renowned political analyst Prof Mutahi Ngunyi telling Igathe politics is not about trust but common interests.

“The Currency of POLITICS is Not TRUST. It is common INTERESTS. Trust is for GIRLS, if you are a BOY. Polycarp should not have asked for Sonko’s TRUST. Sonko is NOT a Girl. He is a TH*G,” tweeted Ngunyi.

Some of his followers disagreed with him saying the fact that Igathe is not a politician, trust should have been the driving factor all through.

“Igathe is not a politician, he is a corporate strategist. In his world, TRUST is the currency,” Sema Ukweli said.

However, majority of Kenyans seemed to agree with Igathe that resigning is the best decision he has taken.

Felix Karbolo said: “It takes a lot of wisdom and sound mind for one to take such a decision especially in a country like Kenya. What an inspiration to many for the bold decision.”

Martin Karanja: “Just when I thought Nairobi was in good hands courtesy of your integrity and diligence. Nonetheless [it’s an] opportunity to serve Nairobians and Kenyans at large in a different capacity still awaits you.”

Karago D Mbiru gave him a message of hope saying “Very sad turn of events. Keep serving wherever you go next. There’s always a place for you to serve. You have my best wishes and support.”

Annita Ngugi flatly noted that Igathe was the reason why they voted in his boss.

“For some us, you were the reason we voted for the Governor. We had a lot of hope in you @IgathePolycarp. & We still do sir! I wish you the best.”

A twitter user, Matrix, offered to buy him a beer for taking that tough decision. “Hi boss. Can I buy you a beer?”

In an earlier story by Jamhuri News, the fallout between Igathe and Sonko was highlighted and State House interference was cited to be the cause.

However, Igathe refuted the claims even showing screenshots of his conversation with Sonko over a period of time.
