Kiambaa MP candidate appeals for sh200, 000 from Social media users to pay IEBC fine

An independent candidate from Kiambaa, Kiambu County fined sh200, 000 for using Jubilee materials in his campaign resulted to seeking help from well wishers online.

Kariri Njama, took to social media and appealed to his supporters and well wishers to help him raise the fine imposed on him by IEBC.

“To all people of goodwill, this is a #personal_appeal to all well wishers to kindly support me raise the above fine by midday today … failure to which we shall be disqualified from the race.

Please you can do so via MPESA … your support counts as we strive to have a better leadership in Kiambaa,” read the whatsApp plea.

IEBC Electoral Code of Conduct Committee found the politician guilty of using President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto images in his campaign posters.

The petition had been lodged by a voter from the constituency, Stephen Ndung’u, who cited that Njama’s move to use Uhuru’s images in his campaign posters was misleading.

It is not clear if he managed to raise the money by Friday which was the deadline.

This week, several politicians have been fined by the IEBC for using photos of Uhuru and Raila Odinga in their campaign posters yet they are independent candidates.

Laikipia gubernatorial hopeful Nderitu Mureithi together with Vihiga Governor Cyprian Awiti were fined sh500, 000 each for using Uhuru’s and Raila’s photos respectively in their campaign posters.

Kasarani MP John Njoroge who is also defending his seat as an independent candidate was fined sh250, 000 for using Uhuru’s photo and Jubilee symbols in his campaign.
