Members of the Kikuyu Council of Elders Association from Kiambu County after a meeting at a hotel on Thika Road on March 23, 2017 where they dismissed allegations that the association is supporting the re-election of Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero.

Just a few months after Kiambu County Kikuyu Council of Elders Chairman Waweru wa Mbugua pledged to support Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero’s re-election, he has been suspended.

Mbugua, together with 16 other elders whom he led to Kidero’s office in January to pledge their support for his re-election, were suspended from the council.

Mbugua was handed a five season suspension which is equivalent to 5 years while the other 16 got 4 seasons suspension which is equal to four years.

On Thursday, Interim County Chairman for the elders’ council Choru wa Muiruri who spoke in Kikuyu town said the council has more than enough reasons to suspend Mbugua and his group.

He said the suspended Chair and his group made a decision to support Kidero without consulting the rest of the elders and made it look like they were all in agreement to support Kidero which was not the case.

“They promised Kidero that we are supporting his re-election but we have never discussed the issue as an agenda,” stated the interim county chair as told by the Star.

“The message went as if we had discussed it. We are sending the message that those sentiments were his but not for the elders. He has misrepresented us in many occasions and this has to stop,” added Muiruri.

Mbugua was also condemned for a separate incident where he led another group of elders from Kiambu County to curse Royal Media Services owner S.K Macharia.

Macharia was cursed by the elders for ostensibly stating in front of a Senate Committee that Raila Odinga actually won the 2007 elections but was denied the victory.

Commenting on the matter, Muiruri noted that it is not for them as elders to curse; but to offer advice which means that Mbugua erred when he cursed Macharia in Murang’a.

“We cannot curse but offer advice to our society which is guided by our spiritual stand,” said Muiruri adding that: “We know in our hearts that S.K Macharia was not cursed.”
