Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has been impeached.

Waiguru was impeached by 23 MCAs on Tuesday. Four others abstained from voting while six others voted for her to stay.

Mutira Ward MCA David Kinyua Wangui sponsored the impeachment motion citing gross misconduct and abuse of office involving misappropriation of funds.

While moving the motion at noon, Kinyua cited several tenders which he alleged were awarded irregularly with the governor’s authorization.

“The tender for Procurement of the Governor’s vehicle at a cost of Ksh15 million was irregularly conferred despite the same having being awarded during the previous government.

“This purchase was made using funds meant for the Contractors Retention Account – which amounts to misappropriation of funds and imprudent use of public resources,” he submitted before the House moments before the vote was taken.

He further cited that in March 2018, a company registered under the name Eva Trading Agencies Ltd allegedly owned by brother to the Chief Financial Officer.

“…the tender for Proposed Water Works for Mwea-Makima Project CJK/MOW/OT/038/2017-2018. It was awarded to Eva Trading Agencies Ltd.

“The said company is associated with the family of Mugo Ndavi who is the CFO whose brother, Edwin Ndavi, holds 300 shares, in total disregard of conflict of interest and in furtherance of corrupt and joint criminal enterprise overseen by the Governor,” Kinyua stated.

He listed other tenders awarded which he described as “shady” and done in full knowledge of the Kirinyaga Governor.

MCAs who supported the motion spent Monday night at the assembly buildings saying that they were afraid they would not make it to the assembly on Tuesday morning.

In a statement on Tuesday morning, Waiguru said that the court had issued an order barring the impeachment motion.

She warned that should the motion continue, she will hold the Speaker and all those who participated in contempt.
