KRA hunts for billionaire Jimmy Wanjigi over sh225 million tax evasion claims

Weeks after his name came up within two most powerful political parties in the country, Billionaire businessman Jimmy Wanjigi has found himself at odds with Kenya Revenue Authority.

KRA has accused Wanjigi of tax evasion and is now demanding sh225 million from one of his companies, Enterprise Oil in tax arrears, reports Daily Nation.

The taxman says that these arrears date back from January 2008 and December 2012.

Enterprises Oil according to KRA offered facilitation of awarding contracts and logistical support to Chinese companies namely: Shengli Engineering and Consulting and China National Aero-Technology International Engineering Company (Cactic).

As such, services provided to those companies by Wanjigi’s company were consumed in Kenya meaning that it is subject to paying Value Added Tax (VAT).

However, Wanjigi appealed against the claim by KRA though a memorandum dated June 21, 2017.

Wanjigi has been a prominent figure behind the scenes when it comes to campaign financing for different political parties.

In the run up to 2013 polls, he was a key point-man in bankrolling President Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto’s campaign bid.

And his stake in doing all this is that he was to get government’s mega contracts.

After his fallout with Jubilee administration, the tycoon moved to NASA where once again, he is leading in the coalition’s resource mobilization.

The new hunt by KRA is likely to put Wanjigi and the NASA coalition in a tight spot as the tax man goes for his companies.

Already, there are infightings in the Raila Odinga led coalition due to the launching of two separate manifestos.

Economist Dr. David Ndii cited that the drafting of a separate manifesto is the doing of “tenderpreneurs” associating themselves with NASA.
