KU Referral Hospital increases bed capacity as 671 new cases are recorded

The Ministry of Health has flagged increasing COVID-19 cases in Kiambu County which now has the second-highest number of infections.

Health CS Mutahi Kagwe on Wednesday announced that Kenya recorded 671 new cases in the last 24 hours. The total cases confirmed hitherto are 23, 873.

Kagwe spoke at the Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Hospital during the launch of ICU and HDU beds.

A total of 6,200 samples were tested bringing the total number of samples tested to 329,123.

Nairobi which has registered high numbers since March when the first coronavirus case was confirmed had 376 cases.

Some 413 male and 258 females tested positive with the youngest being a three-year-old child and the oldest being 94 years.

Additionally, 603 patients were discharged bringing the total recoveries to 9,930. 436 of these patients were from home-based care while 167 were from hospital.

Sadly, three more people succumbed to the virus bringing the total number of deaths to 391.

KU Referral Hospital will now have a combined bed capacity of 1,150, 60 of which will be in HDU and 440 in the ICU.

It is one of the health facilities with the highest number of coronavirus patients placed in isolation.
