Maintain a healthy diet, Kenyans urged as cases near 5,000 mark

New coronavirus cases, 155 were recorded in Kenya on Tuesday.

Health CAS Dr Mercy Mwangangi said that a total of 4, 171 samples were tested in the last 24 hours. The total number of coronavirus cases is now 4,952.

A total number of samples tested so far is 146,537. The youngest of the new cases is aged one-year-old, while the oldest is 77 years.

She added that 102 patients have been discharged, raising of recoveries in the country to 1,782.

However, three more patients died, raising the total fatalities to 128.

While still on matter coronavirus, the health ministry has reiterated on the need to adhere to proper nutrition as a way to fight the virus since it does not have a cure.

Research on the virus so far shows that a high immunity level has shown a quicker healing span for patients ailing from the virus.

“As we continue with the fight against Covid-19, I want to emphasise the importance of nutrition, hydration and physical activity. Consumption of a healthy diet and engaging in regular physical activities, help to strengthen our immune systems,” the CS urged in one of his COVID-19 updates.

Dr Jane Ambuko, a senior lecturer and head of horticulture at University of Nairobi’s Department of Plant Science and Crop Protection, told Nation that this is the time to maintain a healthy diet.

She urged that as one takes a proper diet rich in carbohydrate, protein and vegetables, it is also important to take vegetables and fruits daily to boost ones immunity.

Dr Ambuko noted that vegetables and fruits are not regularly consumed as proteins and carbohydrates.

Dr Gladys Mugambi, a nutritionist and Health ministry’s head of the Health Promotion Division, insisted on taking foods rich in Vitamin C to power up the body’s immunity.

“Our immune cells have a high need for vitamin C when they are working hard to fight infection, so if you find yourself with symptoms, this is the time to start feeding on fruits and foods that are rich in vitamin C,” Dr Mugambi insisted.
