Driver’s licenses and ID cards that will expire in June have been automatically extended until October 2020, those that will expire in July have been extended until November 2020, and those that will expire in August have been extended until December 2020.

The RMV is taking this and other important steps during the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic to reduce the number of customers required to visit an RMV Service Center for in-person transactions and complement the other efforts underway across state government to help residents stay safe and healthy.

Additionally, the federal government announced a revised REAL ID compliance deadline of October 1, 2021. Because a REAL ID requires an in-person visit to an RMV Service Center, the RMV has suspended the issuance of REAL IDs until at least September 2020. If you are a AAA member, you can make a reservation to renew or upgrade your driver’s license/ID at select AAA locations. Visit aaa.com/appointments to schedule your visit.

If you wish to renew before the extended date, the RMV is only allowing online renewals at this time. You have the choice of obtaining a Standard license or ID card online now or waiting until after September 2020 to renew and obtain a REAL ID. To obtain a Standard license/ID card, follow the steps below.

  1. You will need to provide information from your citizenship/lawful presence document. Review the enclosed checklist and have your document ready.
  2. Visit Mass.Gov/RMV and click on “Online Service Center,” select your renewal transaction (Driver’s License or ID), and then follow the prompts to verify your identity and start your transaction.
  3. Choose Standard Massachusetts driver’s license/ID card and follow the prompts to complete your transaction online.

The RMV appreciates your cooperation in waiting to renew your driver’s license or ID card, or perform other non-urgent, in-person transactions that cannot be completed online at Mass.Gov/RMV.
