For 28-year-old Evelyn Atieno, a single mother of two, being a mason has proven that she is equal to the task.

She carries heavy bricks and mixes mortar just like her male colleagues in the industry.

Atieno plies her trade in Siaya town. She never ceases to stun fellow women as she walk home with Ksh1,000 daily.

With this amount, she is able to cater for the needs of her two children and pay her house rent.

She told the Star that she had been working as a hotel attendant only earning Ksh100 daily but struck gold in construction where she walks home with 10 times the amount she earned at the hotel.

“I started working at a hotel where I earned Sh100 a day then ventured into business selling chips, which collapsed. I then joined construction, which I find more reliable and well paying,” she cites.

Interestingly, the young mother is unbothered by curious onlookers. Atieno says she is thrilled by manual labour since her childhood.

This is not the first time she is working as a mason; she did it again three years ago where she earned Sh500. This is where he got her first training on the site and she remains forever grateful for this.

“I had to finish chores assigned to me in a construction site, such as sweeping and concrete curing before I could be allowed to learn a thing or two from the experienced masons,’’ she says.

Not one to be left behind as her peers achieve big things in life, Atieno is focusing on setting up a business. However, she will continue with her work in construction.

Although it pays her well, she acknowledged that an average woman cannot survive in her type of work because it is laborious.
