MPs on fresh bid to block Waiguru from vying for Kirinyaga governorship

Parliamentary Committee on Public Accounts Committee (PAC) led by Rarienda MP Nicholas Gumbo has recommended that former Devolution CS Ann Waiguru be barred from holding public office.

Also, the committee has urged Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) and Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC) to commence fresh investigations on her.

Gumbo tabled the report on the floor of the house on Wednesday where he also alluded to the fact that the former CS masterminded the sh1.8 billion heist.

The report called for a lifestyle audit for the Kirinyaga gubernatorial hopeful as well as fresh investigations launched.

A member of the committee, Eseli Simiyu (Tongaren MP) said that Waiguru is culpable of what happened in the ministry by the fact that all Cabinet Secretaries have overall power in procurement within their ministries going by a decision arrived at by the Cabinet.

However, Waiguru played cool on the matter stating that the report has always been there and did not stop her bid for governorship.

She also said that the accusations in the report cannot ”hold water in court”.

Early this week, she moved to court seeking to have gagging orders on the NYS theft issued by the court lifted.

Principal Magistrate David Mburu issued the gag order on Waiguru after Paul Kihara a suspect in the NYS grand theft sued her for defamation.

She argued that the order is vague and she finds it hard to comply.

“The order places me between obeying court orders and complying with my civic duty to assist with investigations into the said loss of money,” she said in an affidavit filed at Milimani as told by the Star.

She said that once the order is lifted, she will aid in investigations into the theft of the money in NYS.

“I have previously been summoned by EACC and police to assist with investigations. The orders are extremely wide and prevent me from assisting with pending investigations,” she argued.

But Cheragany MP Wesley Korir during the debate spoke plaintively about the heist saying that Uhuru will be remembered for NYS saga.

“People will remember Uhuru for NYS as they did Kibaki for Anglo Leasing and Moi for Goldenberg,” he told Parliament as Daily Nation reports.
