Mutula Kilonzo’s autopsy report released four years after his death

The Government has released a report revealing the cause of death of former Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo.

The former Justice Minister died as a result of massive bleeding due to high blood pressure according to the report released yesterday, four years later after his demise.

“Mr. Kilonzo died of massive hemorrhage into the chest and cranial cavity due to significantly elevated blood pressure due to several factors including but not limited to excessive ingestion of pseudoephedrine (nasal/sinus decongestant) in combination with caffeine,” indicated the report.

It was released at the Machakos law Court during an inquest hearing of his death.

Dr S. W Mwangi, a general medical practitioner from Nakuru presented it.

During the fateful day of his death on April 16, 2013; the former Minister had not complained of any illness.

His son, Mutula Kilonzo Jnr (Makueni Senator) and a farm hand Mulei Mulwa said the deceased had not told them anything on the fateful day about any illness.

However, he took a nap and never woke up.

Dr Mwangi told the trial magistrate that he got to examine the lifeless body of Kilonzo four hours after his death.

Foam had formed in his mouth and blood oozed out through his nose and mouth and towards the right side of his head.

There was also an indication that the deceased has also thrown up.

A family member said that they felt government was hiding something since a copy of his autopsy report had been hoarded and no one came out to explain the excessive bleeding that led to the revered lawyer’s death.

“It was generally felt that the massive bleeding could not be explained,” said the family member.

The source also said that the autopsy report should have been made available to the family first before being produced in court during the inquest.

“The report should have been given to the family first before being produced in court.”

Before Dr Mwangi explained the cause of the massive bleeding, the family had hired a U.K pathologist, Prof Ian Calder who did not make any conclusive finding due to what he said was tampering with the samples between Kenya and U.K.
