Nation journalist Walter Menya’s accuser revealed at Milimani Law Courts

Nation Media journalist Mr. Walter Menya appeared before Milimani law courts after he was arrested for allegedly asking for a bribe to publish a political story.

Mr. Menya allegedly asked for  Sh50,000 bribe from a Kiprotich Koros so he could ”kill a story” he had published about Civil servants in Jubilee Party Foundation allegedly accused of illegally participating in Jubilee campaigns.

According to The Star, the DCI says Menya was found with Sh20,000 treated for the purpose of evidence collection at the time of arrest. The DCI officer also said that records showed that Menya received Sh32,000 through M-Pesa transactions between June 15 and 17.

Last week, Menya published a story about Jubilee Foundation, highlighting what the article called ”illegal participation” by civil servants in Jubilee campaigns.

The affidavit says after getting the money, Menya published the story ‘Civil servants in JP Foundation say all they want is to alleviate poverty’.

The Kenya Union of Journalists came out to support Menya, staging a peaceful protest in the city.

“All journalists must come out to say ‘no’ to intimidation and show solidarity with Walter Menya who was arrested after a setup.”

Kenyans have condemned the arrest terming it as media intimidation through setups.

He did not take a plea but he returned to court at 2 pm for the hearing of an application for his detention during investigations. A decision has not been made yet.
