Police officers decry ‘extortion’ in Sh60 million contribution for Utumishi Girls construction

Sixty thousand police officers across the country are required to contribute Sh1000 each for 10 months towards the construction of Utumishi Girls’ Secondary School in Gilgil.

The money will go towards construction of two classrooms, a kitchen and an administration block.

But this has rubbed them the wrong way. They have protested this decision reached by top officers in the National Police Service at Vigilance House.

All units are required to contribute this money according to a letter dated December 7, 2017, reference C/ORG/18/18/VOL.1/180, from Anti-Stock Theft Unit commandant Moses Kikului, reports the Star.

Some of the officers said it is a good initiative but the approach employed is misleading.

One of them who requested not to be named for fear if victimization said such projects should be left to the Education Ministry and not the National Police Service.

“This is regrettable. It is extortion of the highest order and the orders were from above…from a commandant. He is only commandant to very few officers who cannot raise Sh60 million alone within 10 months,” said the officer.

Utumishi Boys’ which may have inspired the thought to build a sister school is one of Kenya’s best national schools.
