President Kenyatta and his family are mourning the demise of Margaret Wambui who is the first daughter of the first president, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta. She is president Kenyatta’s step sister and was Mzee’s second born of Kenyatta’s first wife Grace Wahu.
Wambui, 89, passed away Wednesday at her home in Lavington, Nairobi.
The late Wambui went to Ruthimitu Primary School and, she was among the first students at Alliance High School, in 1947. She lived a private life after a long political career as an activist of women empowerment and involvement in politics.
Wambui was the first female to hold the position of a mayor when she served as the Mayor of Nairobi from 1970 to 1976. She was then named the country’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, serving for a decade from 1976-1986
